The Shannon Williams Memorial Tournament was held Sept. 20-21 at the Mill Creek Sports Plex in Walla Walla, Washington. Friends and former teammates came together for a weekend of softball to celebrate the life of Shannon. The tournament format was a co-ed portion as well as a men’s super draft. There were 12 co-ed teams and enough men players to form four teams for the Super Draft. The weekend forecast had rain all weekend and the players were not sure if the tournament would be held but the Tournament Director stated that “we would play rain or shine”.

On Saturday, the weather was just fine and it seemed that it would not rain but once night came the clouds opened up, never bothering the players and everyone was having a great time. On Sunday it was a single elimination for both parts of the tournament and when all was said and done, team Digits defeated S-Doggs 20-11 to win the men’s Super Draft. In the co-ed portion of the tournament it was down to the top two co-ed teams in the area, Wildfire and Aloha Sushi. Aloha Sushi had dominated most of the tournaments held in Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon this year but Wildfire was just as competitive. The way Aloha Sushi had been playing it didn’t look like anyone would be able to keep them from taking the championship, but in the end Wildfire had done just that, they beat Aloha Sushi 7-1 to take home the championship. Shannon had made many friends over the years through softball and a few of his closest friends, Luis Ocanez, Tony Arevelo and Junior Zamora are keeping Shannon’s memory alive by holding this tournament every year and it gives everyone a chance for people to make new friends through softball, Shannon would be very proud.
