OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Arizona State Sun Devils beat Texas A&M 11-0 to step out of the shadow of in-state rival Arizona and take home its very first NCAA title.
Arizona State qualified for its first ever Women’s World Series championship by beating Alabama 3-1 while Texas A&M took nine innings to defeat Florida 1-0 for their shot at the title.
The Devil’s Katie Burkhart showed off Arizona States best side in game one of the best-of-three series as Burkhart struck out 11 and pitched a two-hit complete game shutout defeating the Aggies 3-0. Krista Donnenwirth supplied all the offense as she went 3-for-3 with three RBI. The win was Burkharts 40th of the year and her 20th complete-game shutout of the season.
Burkhart struck out 13 and threw a four-hitter and Kaitlin Cochran fired up the offense with a three-run homer as Arizona State claimed its first NCAA Women’s College World Series title with an 11-0 win against Texas A&M in game two of the series. Cochran had six straight intentional walks to start the World Series. The Sun Devils turned the game into a blowout with seven runs in the seventh inning, including a two-run single by Caylyn Carlson and a three-run home run by Mindy Cowles. The 11-0 victory was the biggest margin ever in a championship deciding game. This was the 21st time a PAC-10 school has won the title in the 27 years of the WCWS.
