SPARKS, NV – Well known Northern Nevada umpire Michael LayPort passed away in April. LayPort was 62.
LayPort was a competitive speed skater winning several state and national men’s speed skating championships. He competed in the World Championships in Argentina and was named the fastest speed skater in America by Sports Illustrated in 1970.
He spent many years coaching speed skaters at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Eventually his love for sports led to a career as a full time sports official.
LayPorts love for sports allowed him to be an official for numerous sports throughout the years including volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball. Many would say that his favorite sport was softball and for his dedication to mentor new umpires and manage games he will be greatly missed.
LayPort earned the rank of sergeant during his six years in the Marine Corps where he did two tours in Vietnam. He is survived by his two brothers, children and grandchildren.
