TUSCON, AZ – The month of April marks the time for the Tucson Showdown Qualifier which was held on April 14 through the 22 this year.
The event was held at Lincoln Park in the southwest corner of the city. The tournament sanctioned by Senior Softball-USA was a rousing success with 63 teams coming to compete from aroundd the country in 183 games. It was definitely a hard fought and well played tournament.
On the way to the 65 division championship game, Robson Ranch from Casa Grande, AZ, waded through some heavy competition. They started the tournament with a big loss to the Albuquerque Roadrunners 23-13 and they barely got by Colorado Scrap Iron in their next game by a score of 20-19. It wasn’t until then that they got serious.
Next on the Robson Ranch radar was local team the Tucson Pioneers. They beat the Pioneers 18-15. They then played the Colorado Scrap Iron team once again. The Robson team then faced the Colorado Scrap Iron team for a second time. This time the boys from the Ranch dominated the men of Iron with a 29-12 victory.
The Roadrunners were the team that had delivered Robson Ranch their only loss in the tournament but the Albuquerque team didn’t run hard enough or fast enough to leave with a victory this time. It was Robson Ranch 13 and the Albuquerque Roadrunners 4.
The championship game of the Tucson Showdown saw Robson Ranch, once again, face their familiar foes, Colorado Scrap Iron. The Colorado team scrapped all the way to the end but Robson Ranch took the championship with a score of 19-12 for the knockout punch.
Son-E-Beaches overcame the loser’s bracket to win the championship title for the men’s 50 AA division, with team CJS taking the 50 AAA title.
The 55 division was filled with excitement and lots of runs scored, when major team, Grimes Trucking beat Master Collision 36-35.
And the AA teams played seven bracket games before Agave Homes came out on top over Chicano Cubs.
Kelly Glass from Green Valley, AZ won the 60 AA title, while Hi Desert 60’s took the AAA championship.
