Whats Crackin’ & Kegger Krew Win SoCal CWSA Women’s Opener

LA MIRADA, CA - La Mirada Regional Park was the host of the California Women’s Softball Association Opener. The season opening tournament brought together women ‘C’ teams such as Fired Up, Whats Crackin’, Old School, da’ WB, 2 Hot 2 Handle, WTS Softball Crew, CTC, Lights Out and On The Run. The women’s ‘D’ bracket had a strong showing that included such notables as Got Pride, Boozers, Turn 2, In Motion, Play Hard, Kegger Krew, Mojo, LA Storm, Playtime, Rounding 3rd/Booya, So. Cal. Tribe and Karma.

According to Armando Acosta, CWSA tournament director, "The weather was great and all the ladies came out to battle in one of the biggest women’s tournaments of the year! I also added a women’s Easton Home Run Hitting contest to top it off. I want to congratulate Robin Royak from On The Run for taking the top prize."

In the ‘C’ division winner’s bracket semi-final CTC faced off against Whats Crackin’. Whats Crackin’ came up with the dramatic 10-9 win sending CTC into the loser’s bracket to play On The Run. In the 3rd Place loser out game CTC jumped out to a 15-4 lead after four innings of play. In the top of the 5th, CTC put up one run extending their lead to 16-4. On The Run tried to come back but fell short scoring three more runs and CTC won with the final score of 16-7, With the win CTC advanced to the finals against Whats Crackin’ searching for payback against the team that put them in the loser’s bracket.

In the championship round Whats Crackin’ raced out to a 6-0 lead after four innings of play. CTC was held scoreless till the bottom of the 5th when they started a thrilling rally. CTC put up the next seven runs and took the lead. Whats Crackin’ was held scoreless by CTC for the rest of the game and CTC won 7-6 to send the championship round to an ‘if’ game. In the ‘if’ game Whats Crackin’, once again, surged to a big, early lead at 12-5. This time CTC didn’t have enough gas in the tank and fell short. Whats Crackin’ was able hold CTC scoreless for the rest of the game. Whats Crackin’ won 14-5 to win the seasons first Southern California Women’s Softball Association Tournament.

The ‘C’ Tournament Stand Outs were Nicole Fiola, Adrie Bogaars and Becky Hardy from Whats Crackin’ and Pam Purcell and Monica Guerrero from Team CTC.

In the ‘D’ division, the last undefeated game had LA Storm go up against Kegger Krew. Kegger Krew came up with the hard fought win 14-9 sending LA Storm into the loser’s bracket where Got Pride would be waiting them.
In the loser out final the LA Storm was able to rebound and right the ship against Got Pride. Even though Got Pride took an early 3-0 lead after the 1st inning of play it was all LA Storm from there. LA Storm held Got Pride scoreless from the 2nd inning of play while they chipped away with runs. The final score was 10-3 with LA Storm advancing into the finals where they would be searching for revenge against Kegger Krew.

It would not happen on this day as the undefeated Kegger Krew took a 6-4 lead after three innings. In the top of the 4th inning, Kegger Krew smashed in another eight runs extending their lead to 14-4. LA Storm just ran out of gas as Kegger Krew claimed a 15-4 victory.

Kegger Krew took top honors in the Southern California Women’s Softball Association ‘D’ division tournament of the year.

The ‘D’ Tournament Stand Outs were awarded to Kegger Krew’s Christina Rodriguez, JJ Jackson and Bri Pimentel. LA Storm had Anne Larson and Rose Martinez honored.

Armando Acosta went to say in conclusion, "I just wanted to thank all the ladies for coming out and supporting the New Southern California Women’s Softball Association. Without all the women that play softball there wouldn’t be a big softball program the like the CWSA in Southern California. Thanks again for a great CWSA Opening Day turn out."
